Secondary
School Program (O.S.S.D)
According to the Ontario
Education System, every student needs to have 30 credits (including
18 compulsory credits) in order to graduate from a Canadian high school
and receive an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (O.S.S.D).
Once the student graduates from the high school, has an O.S.S.D and
finishes 6 pre-university credits, the student may then apply to any
universities in Ontario through Ontario
Universities' Application Centre (OUAC), or to Ontario colleges
through Ontario
College Application Services (OCAS). They can also apply to any
university or college in Canada, the United States and other parts
of the world.
Overseas students could be granted up to maximum 24 equivalent credits
by the school Principal or Guidance Department based on their academic
achievements in their home countries.

ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMA
Diploma Requirements
To earn the diploma, an OSSD student must: • Earn 18 compulsory
credits • Earn 12 optional credits • Complete
40 hours of community involvement activities • Pass the
Grade 10 English Literacy Test COMPULSORY COURSES
(total of 18) • 4 credits in English (1 credit
per grade) • 1 credit in French as a second language or
other Foreign Language • 3 credits in Mathematics (at least
1 credit in grade 11 or 12) • 2 credits in Science •
1 credit in Canadian history • 1 credit in Canadian geography
• 1 credit in the Arts • 1 credit in Health and Physical
Education • 0.5 credit in Civics • 0.5 credit
in Career Studies Plus: • 1 additional
credit in English, a Third language, or Social Science and the Humanities,
or Canadian and World Studies; • 1 additional credit in
Health and Physical Education, or the Arts, or Business Studies;
• 1 additional credit in Science (Grade 11 or 12) or Technological
Education. (Grade 9-12) Community Involvement –
40 hours
Students must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement
as a requirement of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. These 40
hours may be completed at any time during the student’s high
school years and may take place in a variety of settings, including
not-for-profit organizations, business, public sector institutions,
and informal settings. Students will decide how they will complete
the community involvement requirement. Policies on
Substitutions for Compulsory Courses
Up to 3 compulsory courses may be substituted at the discretion of
the principal in order to meet the needs of individual students. The
total number of credits required for a diploma remains at 30.
THE GRADE 10 READING AND WRITING TEST
The successful completion of the Grade 10 Test of Reading and Writing
Skills is required for graduation. The test will be administrated
in the fall or spring. Deferrals:
Some students may benefit from delaying completion of this test. The
principal may decide to defer this test in order to allow student
more time to acquire the level of proficiency succeed.
WAIVING PREREQUISITES:
The principal has the authority to waive a prerequisite for a course.
This documentation will be placed in the student’s OSR.
ACCESS TO OSR:
The parent or guardian of a pupil, and the pupil at age 18, will have
access to a student’s OSR file upon request. OST:
An Ontario Student Transcript with all of the student’s credits
to date will be made available to the student, parent, or guardian
